Freddie Owens Set for Execution Despite Doubts

Convicted Killer's Mother Desperately Appeals

Tonight at 10, Sandra Owens is pleading for the life of her son, Freddie. Freddie is set to be executed this Friday for a murder he committed when he was 20 years old. Owens’ mother claims he acted in self-defense during a robbery.

Owens' Conviction and Appeals

Owens was convicted in 1999 of the murder of a man named Kevin Freeman. He was sentenced to death, and his conviction has been upheld on appeal.

In recent years, however, there have been growing doubts about Owens' guilt. Several witnesses have recanted their testimony, and new evidence has come to light that suggests Owens may have been acting in self-defense.

Witness Recantations and New Evidence

Two of the witnesses who testified against Owens at his trial have since recanted their testimony. One witness, Sharonda Jackson, said she was pressured by police to lie about what she saw.

Another witness, Andre Daniels, said he saw Owens shoot Freeman, but he now believes that Owens was acting in self-defense. Owens' supporters also point to new evidence, including a police report that was not disclosed to Owens' attorneys at trial.

The report suggests that Freeman was armed with a gun when he was killed. This evidence, if true, could support Owens' claim that he was acting in self-defense.

Owens' Mother's Plea

Sandra Owens is now pleading for her son's life. She said she believes that Freddie is innocent, and she doesn't want to see him executed for a crime he didn't commit.

"I'm begging for mercy," Sandra Owens said. "I'm asking the governor to spare my son's life. He doesn't deserve to die."

Owens' supporters are also urging the governor to grant clemency. They believe that Owens is a changed man who deserves a second chance.

"Freddie Owens has spent more than two decades in prison," said Rev. Jesse Jackson. "He has made mistakes, but he has also turned his life around. He is a good man who deserves to live."

The governor has not yet made a decision on whether to grant clemency to Owens. He is expected to make a decision soon.
